Edmund D. “Dan” Milam, Jr.
In September, 2004, Dan Milam joined the firm as a partner/member. Mr. Milam has practiced law in the Triangle area since 1979. Mr. Milam’s primary area of practice is residential and commercial real estate law.
Edmund D. “Dan” Milam, Jr. was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was valedictorian of his high school class. Dan graduated magna cum laude from Duke University in 1975 with a B.A. degree in business. He obtained his J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1979, before returning to Durham, which he has called home ever since. Prior to joining Milam & Idol, PLLC in 2004, Dan was a partner with Nye, Mitchell and Milam (emphasis on construction contract law) through 1987, and then a partner with Stubbs, Cole, Breedlove, Prentis & Biggs, PLLC (emphasis on real estate law) until 2004. Dan’s current law practice is primarily devoted to real property law, with clients including the Durham Regional Association of REALTORS, Inc. among others.
Dan is married to Martha New Milam. He is a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he has served as deacon. He is currently an active member of the Durham Lions Club, and has previously been a member of the Jaycees, Tobaccoland Kiwanis and the Durham Exchange Club. Dan enjoys sports, reading and married life with Martha.
Robert A. “Bob” Idol
In January, 2008, Bob Idol joined the firm as a partner/member. Mr. Idol has practiced law in the Triangle area since 1983. Mr. Idol’s primary areas of practice are estate planning, trusts, estate administration, business organizations (corporations and limited liability companies) and tax-exempt organizations.
Bob was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1981, after receiving his undergraduate degree in business administration and his law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition, he received his Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.) from Emory University in 1983.
He is a co-author of Administration of the Estate in North Carolina published by the National Business Institute, past president of the Durham/Orange Estate Planning Council, and past president of the Young Lawyers Division of the Durham County Bar Association. He has lectured for the Duke Institute for Learning in Retirement, the Duke University Eye Center, Merrill Lynch Trust Company, Central Carolina Bank & Trust Company (now SunTrust), Prudential Life Insurance Company, Southern National Bank Trust & Capital Management Group (now Branch Banking & Trust Company) and Durham Regional Hospital, and he has served on the Triangle Hospice Planned Giving Advisory Group and the Greater Triangle Community Foundation Advisory Board. Prior to joining Milam & Idol, PLLC, he was a shareholder with Bryant, Patterson, Covington, Idol & Lewis, P.A. for over 20 years.
Martha New Milam
Martha New Milam has practiced law in the Triangle area since 1987. Ms. Milam’s primary areas of practice are family law and mediation.
A native of Durham, North Carolina, Martha New Milam was born at Watts Hospital in Durham on November 19, 1956. She was educated in the Durham City and County public schools, graduating from Jordan High School in 1975. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1980 and the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1987. Martha is a North Carolina State Bar Certified Family Specialist, and she is certified by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission to conduct mediated settlement conferences in Family Financial cases and in Civil Superior Court cases. Ms. Milam has an AV rating with Martindale Hubbell and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer since 2009. Martha’s primary area of practice is Family Law. This includes counseling clients in all areas of Family Law, including representing clients in the District Courts of Durham County, Orange County and Wake County, providing mediation and arbitration services in Family Law matters, serving as a Parenting Coordinator and representing clients in the Collaborative Process.
Martha is married to Dan Milam, Jr. She is a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In her free time, Martha enjoys dance, reading, music and marriage with Dan.
